In my new role as Society Chairman, I'd like to say a few words to introduce myself to some of you and highlight the benefits of sharing in society meetings throughout the season.

Firstly a word or two about your new Chairman. For those of you unable or not interested in attending the A.G.M. I must say it was an interesting experience for me, to follow the procedure of nominating, electing and minuting the process. In being nominated and elected unopposed, I was surprised to then be put in the hot seat to oversee all the subsequent posts being filled on the night.

Anyway here I am and happy to perform the role for the forthcoming season. I've only been officially refereeing for five seasons now, but can go back to having known one of the society's earlier members, Henry Hutt during his days as secretary of Culvers Sports FC. Henry, whose trophy some of you have won in contributing towards the Sutton Society activities was a good friend of my father and I recall him taking me to London grounds like White Hart Lane, Griffen Park and the Valley when he was running the line in Football combination matches. I did not realise until I took up refereeing how much effort and time he must have spent in attaining such a level as a class 1 referee. It made me reflect on how underestimated he was within the Culvers Sports Club surroundings.

With regards the Sutton Society and your role in being part of it, I'd like to say that for those of you who are members of the society but do not wish to attend any of the Wednesday night meetings, I can respect your reasons. However, I would like to know if holding the meetings on another night might change your availability or if the topic of what is discussed might have a bearing on you attending.
Either way, I'd like to know more about those of you who support the society, albeit from a back seat.
I would also like to think that we could use the society meetings to address and exchange experiences that will enable the newer referees amongst us to learn from long term members. Possibly on occasions even to offer new ideas, which perhaps reflect the attitude referees should adopt in the year 2000 going forward!

Here's looking forward to a fruitful (and I don't mean "loads of cautions and dismissals") season, where we can all have more pleasant experiences to talk about.

Mike Taylor
Chairman
