There is so much that we could learn from rugby. Their officials carry alternative shirts and socks so that they are distinguishable from the players. Perhaps it's time that the rules were amended to give soccer referees a similar alternative; possibly a negative version of the traditional kit is an idea. I feel sure that if the rules were less stringent, referees would not strut around like peacocks or harliquins, but would use common sense and maintain the low profile that we all try to keep.

N.B. You may not agree with my views but remember the dates as they could appear in my quiz next February.

Surrey FA Referees' Development Group
re-starting

The Surrey County FA Referees' Committee is about to re-start the above group and will shortly be issuing invitations to those referees under the age of 33 years who they think are showing potential to progress. (33 years was chosen to allow progress through the 'system' and was the age limit in the original Group.)

In order not to miss anyone who may wish to be involved, Societies are invited to nominate members who fall into this age bracket and who would be willing to attend meetings on a regular basis in Fetcham and are committed to refereeing on a regular basis. Candidates may be of any class (and Class 1s ought not to be forgotten).

Those youngsters already on the FAPL Academy scheme need not be nominated but the Association is keen to ensure that anyone under the age of 19 but not in an Academy is nominated providing they are officiating regularly and show real commitment. Potential is not an issue at this stage for them.

May I urge your Society to think whether you have any candidates and, if so, to send your nominations to me by the end of November. I am happy to receive them either in writing or by E-Mail.
